Below you will find a summary of the Adult Community Learning Courses run in conjunction with Warwickshire ACL and Coventry Adult Education at BVC. These courses run at various times throughout the year. The new reduced programme will be commencing after Easter and a more comprehensive programme will be launched in September 2017. Next Steps Computer Course – Course content can be subject to the groups particular needs & interests of the participants, such as organising files & folders, protecting your computer, connecting other devices, email sending attachments, managing contacts, recognising scams, finding & using free software.
Upholstery & Soft Furnishings – Develop the skills & techniques to transform tired pieces of furniture or transform soft furnishings. Suitable for complete beginners & those who already have the skills but would like to develop them. Any small item of upholstery (eg foot stool, small chair) that can be easily transported each week would be suitable or if you prefer soft furnishings then how to make curtains, blinds or cushions will be taught, using specialist equipment.
Intro to Computers –The initial three week course will get you started in using a keyboard and mouse, navigating a Windows-based computer and taking your first steps online. This course is designed especially for those with no previous experience with computers (or very little).
Online Basics – Complete basic web searches, Use email, Stay safe online, Create and format a simple document. You will also be able to gain a qualification
Maths – The aim is to work with people of all ages and abilities, learn at your own pace and level, making maths fun and not as scary as you may remember it!.
This course will result in a Level 1 or Level 2 qualification which is ideal if you are looking to re-enter the job market or if you are seeking a promotion and your lack of qualification is holding you back
Exploring Microsoft Applications – The course will be looking at the latest version of Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2010 (where
applicable): Investigating software bundled with latest version of Microsoft Windows 10.Installing, updating and maintaining your
computer Operating System, Navigating and managing Windows: icons, screens, menus, files and folders, etc.Understanding security and how to stay safe, especially online. An introduction to selected Microsoft Office 2010 applications. Customising the course content by suggesting your own relevant topics!
Beginners Drawing & Watercolours – Suitable for beginners introducing the basic steps of still life drawing & painting, developing skills in colour, shading, observation & composition of subjects.
Beginners / Intermediate Spanish – Intro to the Spanish Language that will help develop your confidence to speak in everyday situations, covering popular phrases & words commonly used when holidaying in Spain, all accompanied with a fascinating insight into life in Spain!
Beginners Still Life with Pastels – Providing the perfect intro to the art of still life drawing with chalk pastels.
ITQ Level 1 – Learn new computer skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification. There are a range of units, each covering a different software application or task, such as:

- Internet and Email
- Desktop Publishing

Crafts Workshops – Discover your creative skills by working on a variety of traditional crafts, making a range of beautiful handmade items based on a relevant theme for the time of year for both the home or to give as gifts.
Social History – Considering major themes of British Social History from 1750 onwards. It is suitable for those who have already attended our Family History courses. We will look at how families and their communities were affected by each topic and find out which records might be available to further develop your family history
Beginners Family History –This intro course covers the basic sources & skills needed to begin effective family history research. Suitable for beginners or those with a little research experience.
Floristry – Each week you will create a beautiful design utilising the best flowers & foliage the season has to offer.
Food Hygiene – The CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (formerly known as the Foundation or Basic Food Hygiene certificate) follows a defined syllabus. This includes subjects such as preventing contamination, personal hygiene and cleaning and disinfection. The course is designed to give you an understanding of the basics of good food hygiene practice and how to prevent and avoid food poisoning
First Aid at Work –This course provides learners with the first aid skills needed to deal with a range of First Aid emergencies in the workplace. This course has duration of 6 hours and deals with practical and theoretical topics. What will I learn? You will be given the opportunity to learn the following: The roles and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
- Assessing an incident
- Managing an unresponsive casualty
- Recovery Position
- Wounds and bleeding
- Minor injuries
- Cuts, grazes and bruises
- Minor burns and scalds
Paediatric First Aid – Certificate valid for 3 years, Meets Ofsted requirements, Ofqual regulated. Learners must be able to demonstrate independently, an ability and willingness to achieve the learning outcomes of the course. This is a 12 hour course which covers how to deal with accidents and emergencies involving children and includes the treatment of an unconscious casualty. It is suitable for people working or caring for children.
British Sign Language – If a deaf person is your friend, member of family, or work colleague, or if it’s a language that simply interests you but of which you have no knowledge, this is the course for you! Join our Level 1 British Sign Language course and you will learn signing in a fun and friendly environment with an experienced tutor. Recognise and produce a range of finger spelt words and sentences signed at an appropriate pace in BSL Recognise and begin to use the appropriate BSL signing structure, Take part in simple conversations using BSL, Give and follow simple instructions in BSL
